Calgary Traffic Control System Upgrade

The presentation to the Group covered both the original Honeywell and the recently installed MIST Traffic Systems for Calgary.
Ahmad also provided information on plans for further expansion of the new system.

The original Honeywell Traffic Control System was installed in 1979 ­p; 80 and was based on a distributed microprocessor system which, at the time, was 'state of the art' technology.
Approximately 50% of Calgary's traffic signals were under central computer control with this system.

The new Management Information System for Transportation (MIST) provides a general platform for various types of traffic control.
Already transferred from the original system are the following traffic control functions:

Phase 1 of MIST was installed in 1998 ­p; 99 and consists of: -

The highlight of the presentation was a live laptop computer demonstration of current traffic conditions at Downtown Calgary intersections.
Live data such as volume, speed and vehicle rates were presented together with intersection historical data both from an overall Downtown view and for a specific intersection.
