Special Dinner Meeting at the Palliser Hotel
Brian Crossley Visit

A dinner meeting was held in the Penthouse Room at the Palliser Hotel to welcome and honour Brian and Janet Crossley's visit to the Group in Calgary.

54 members, spouses and guests were able to enjoy dinner at the usual high Palliser standards and to meet Brian and Janet in person.

Before dinnerget together

Darrel Danyluk, President of APEGGA and Dr. Tom Brown, Head of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Calgary were special guests at this dinner.

At Dinner

After dinner, Brian was formally introduced by Derrick Harrison.

.

He then addressed the Group on a variety of topics

The question of the desirability of Chartered Engineers obtaining Eur. Ing. designation was addressed.
Obtaining the designation is merely a matter of sending in the application and paying the money. It appears that Britain is the country that most supports the designation but the benefits seem rather tenuous as they do not help the mobility of engineers within Europe.

The bulk of Brian's presentation was devoted to his work in Bangladesh as part of a U.K. Aid Programme. Brian has been working with the Bangladeshi Engineering Institutions to help them reorganise and to better equip themselves to train engineers to handle the vast amount of engineering required as that nation develops.

His presentation included slides and a commentary on the very sad social and economic plight of that country.

A vote of thanks to Brian was given by Nigel Shrive who presented Brian with a 'Gift of Sight' donation certificate which CPGCE always makes to its speakers. This presentation was very appropriate given his involvement.with Bangladesh

.
David Elson presented Brian with a special plaque
to recognise his visit to the Group in Calgary.

A 'coffee table' book on Calgary was presented to Janet, also in recognition of her visit.

Gillian Harrison was presented with a bouquet in thanks to her and Derrick for so generously acting as hosts to Brian and Janet Crossley during their visit.

Brian Crossley's visit to the CPGCE in Calgary was the second by officials of the Institution of Civil Engineers from London in recent times. These visits do much to support and encourage the work of the Group.

We look forward to similar visits from our other Sponsoring Institutions in the very near future.
