Visit to Calgary of Brian Crossley,
Vice President (International Affairs),
The Institution of Civil Engineers

Between May 22 and May 26 the Group had the pleasure of entertaining Brian Crossley and his wife Janet during their first visit to Calgary.
They were the guests of Derrick and Gillian Harrison.

Brian Crossley addressing the Group at the dinner meeting

Brian became Vice President (International Affairs) of the Institution of Civil Engineers last year and is the first person to hold this post which has a three year tenure.

On the Victoria Day long weekend Brian and Janet were taken to see Banff, Lake Louise and the Spiral Tunnels.
The Canadian Pacific Railway outdid themselves. Three (!!) trains passed through the tunnels during the short stop at the viewpoint.

On Sunday evening there was a barbecue at David & Liz Elson's home where members of the executive and others involved with the visit were able to meet Brian and Janet in an informal, social, setting.

On Monday Brian was taken by Sally and Ivor Jones down Highway 22 to the Frank Slide, the Oldman River Dam and the Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump Interpretative Centre. Ivor is a recently arrived I.C.E. member of our Group.

Tuesday started with a breakfast for members of the Civil and Structural Institutions to meet Brian at the Danish Canadian Club.

This was followed by a meeting between Brian and Darrel Danyluk, President of APEGGA.

The rest of the morning was taken up with a tour of the Civil Engineering Department at the University of Calgary conducted by Nigel Shrive, followed by lunch hosted by Dr. Tom Brown, the recently appointed department head.

In the afternoon John Spronken took Brian to see the Stoney Trail Bridge including a visit inside the bridge deck structure, guided by Peter Wilson, Chief Structural Engineer of the City of Calgary.

In the evening the Group held a Special Dinner Meeting at the Palliser Hotel at which Brian was our guest speaker.

First thing Wednesday morning Brian, with the assistance of David Price, interviewed a member of the group who is working towards corporate membership by the professional experience route.

Following this, Gamil Tadros took Brian to see a number of interesting bridges in the City, including the University Drive overpass, which has the first composite deck (i.e. no steel reinforcement) in the city, the LRT bridges across the Bow river and some very skewed bridges across Deerfoot Trail.

Gamil then took Brian back to his home for an excellent lunch and Brian had the opportunity to see his football team, Manchester United, win 2 to 1 the European Cup Final against Munich.

This was a exciting conclusion to a very busy but hopefully very enjoyable trip to Calgary.

While Brian was occupied by the "business" activities of the visit, Janet was taken on various cultural and shopping trips by Liz Elson and Gillian Harrison.

All those who had the pleasure of meeting Brian and Janet look forward to their next visit.
