The Institution of Structural Engineers
Structural Awards for 1998
The Stoney Trail Bridge in Calgary received a
Special Structural Award
These Structural Awards are made every year for structural engineering
excellence, as expressed in a physical form in an existing building or structure.
The Stoney Trail Bridge received one of four Special Awards made in 1998.
Casting site for the span at the North abutment
Continuous casting took place as the span was launched across
the river.
Launching the span incrementally
Launching nose approaching the second temporary pier
Span already supported on the first permanent pier
Launching nose being supported by second temporary pier
The bridge completes a North-South access road over the Bow River, linking
the Northwest corner of Calgary with the TransCanada Highway.
It is a twin celled, incrementally launched concrete structure incorporating
external pre-stressed tendons.
One of the factors dictating the design selection was that the South bank
of the river is considered to be an environmentally sensitive area.
Therefore the majority of construction work had to be carried out on the
North bank, with work on the South ban.k being kept to a minimum
The Southern abutment is higher than that at the North bank, requiring that
the span be launched uphill.
The bridge was commissioned by the City of Calgary and a 'Design / Build
contract was awarded to Walter & SCI Construction (Canada) Ltd.
They, in turn, engaged the services of J.R. Spronken and Associates Ltd
of Calgary to carry out the design.
The award was presented in London to John Spronken.
John is actively involved in our Group. He attended our Technical Meeting
in March to describe his London experience, to show us the award and the
plaque provided for mounting on the bridge.
He made a presentation to the Group on the bridge design at an earlier technical
meeting .
