Notes on Spring and Early Summer Social Events

IMAX and Outwest Restaurant

We held our annual IMAX event at Eau Claire Market, Calgary followed by a meal at the nearby Outwest Restaurant.

To accommodate sensible popular demand, this year we insisted on the two back rows of the IMAX theatre.

The Tyrannosaurus Rex movie stretched credibility with a weak storyline and too much acting instead of grand visuals but "The Mysteries of Egypt" was sufficiently National Geographic to satisfy most tastes.

Over 40 engineers and partners enjoyed the films and most stayed for a meal in the semi-private pioneer-furnished room at Outwest.

Thank you to the restaurant staff for their welcome and willingness to wait for the hard core to go home.

We were glad to attract new Chartered Engineers and guests and also catch up with old friends.

Wine Tasting at Willow Park

Thirty or so of our members attended a wine tasting at Willow Park Liquor Store.

The tasting was from a small winery in the Okanagan Valley and we started off the evening with a slide show presented by the marketing representative for the winery.

He went into quite a lot of technical detail regarding temperatures, fermentation etc., making this extremely interesting for our group, especially those chemical engineers in attendance for whom it could almost have passed as a technical meeting.

We sampled six wines, three red and three white and we also got to sample ice wine as a special treat.

There was a local connection with this particular winery as the manager used to be a process engineer in Red Deer and the owner is an owner of an oil and gas company here in Calgary.

Afterwards, everyone was invited back to Alan and Anne Rhodes' home for coffee and nibbles and a good chit chat

Saturday 19th June

Barbecue at the Shrives'

Members of the group gathered at Sue and Nigel Shrive's house for a pot-luck BBQ The weather held as the meal was enjoyed in the privacy of the front lawn. As the sun went down, there was a leisurely move to the balcony for coffee and tea.

Discussion was lively with attendees enjoying the view and the thankful lack of mosquitos. Thanks to the more than 20 hardy souls who ventured out of the city and contributed to a memorably pleasant and enjoyable occasion.
